Safety Advice
PREGNANCY
Fluoxetine causes an acute increase in plasma serotonin levels, leading to a transient reduction in uterine blood flow. This, in turn, reduces the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the fetus, thereby presenting a mechanism for reducing growth and/or eliciting preterm delivery.
BREAST FEEDING
A safety scoring system finds fluoxetine use to be possible during breastfeeding,[1] although others do not recommend its use. [2] If the mother was taking fluoxetine during pregnancy or if other antidepressants have been ineffective, most experts recommend against changing medications during breastfeeding.
