In-Depth Precautions and Warning

Drug Warnings

  • It may cause anxiety and agitation when you first start taking it.
  • It may cause weight loss and decreased appetite.
  • Don't drive or do anything requiring concentration until you know how Fluoxetine affects you.

  • Talk to your doctor if you notice sudden mood changes or develop suicidal thoughts.
  • Inform your doctor if you experience difficulty having an orgasm or have decreased sex drive.

  • The addiction/dependence potential of Fluoxetine is very less.

  • Do not stop treatment suddenly without consulting your doctor as that may lead to agitation, anxiety, and dysphoria.

Drug-Drug Interaction:

The major fluoxetine-drug interactions involve the amino acids L-dopa and L-tryptophan, anorexiants, anticonvulsants, antidepressants, anxiolytics, calcium channel blockers, cyproheptadine, lithium salts, and drugs of abuse. The underlying mechanism and the paradoxical effects of fluoxetine are addressed.

Safety Advice

PREGNANCY

Fluoxetine causes an acute increase in plasma serotonin levels, leading to a transient reduction in uterine blood flow. This, in turn, reduces the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the fetus, thereby presenting a mechanism for reducing growth and/or eliciting preterm delivery.

BREAST FEEDING

A safety scoring system finds fluoxetine use to be possible during breastfeeding,[1] although others do not recommend its use. [2] If the mother was taking fluoxetine during pregnancy or if other antidepressants have been ineffective, most experts recommend against changing medications during breastfeeding.
