Thyroid Comprehensive Profile - 2
Description
These are a group of tests that are often ordered together to help evaluate thyroid gland function and to help diagnose disorders.
The thyroid gland uses iodine (mostly available from the diet in foods such as seafood, bread and salt) to produce thyroid hormones. The two most important hormones are thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), which account for 99.9% and 0.1% of thyroid hormones present in the blood respectively.
Who should get Tested?
It is advisable, for individuals who have a family history. This test is strongly recommended for woman in or near menopause, pregnant woman and for woman who have just delivered a baby. Proper T3 and T4 levels are essential to brain development in the early years of a child’s life. These hormones influence almost all of the metabolic processes in your body. A lack of these hormones in the system at an early age can lead to the development of cretinism (mental retardation) and dwarfism (stunted growth).
This test measures the amount of TSH and Free thyroxine (Free T4) and Free triiodothyronine (Free T3) T3 which is the active forms of the hormone. Getting tested periodically is the best measure one can take to avoid any disorders related to the gland.
