HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE+LOSARTAN belongs to the class of anti-hypertensives primarily taken to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and reduce the risk of stroke in patients with high blood pressure. HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE+LOSARTAN is a combination medication generally used when a single medicine is unable to control high blood pressure. Hypertension or high blood pressure is a life-long or chronic condition in which the force exerted against the artery wall becomes too high. It can lead to the risk of heart diseases, like heart attack and stroke.

HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE+LOSARTAN is a combination of Losartan (angiotensin II receptor antagonist) and Hydrochlorothiazide (thiazide diuretic or water pill). Losartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker that helps to relax and widen the blood vessels (arteries) for easy blood flow to the whole body

HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE+LOSARTAN is a combination of Losartan (angiotensin II receptor antagonist) and Hydrochlorothiazide (thiazide diuretic or water pill). Losartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker that helps to relax and widen the blood vessels (arteries). Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic that prevents absorption of excess salt in the body, preventing fluid retention. Together it lowers blood pressure and prevents the risk of stroke, heart attack, and edema (fluid retention).

Directions for Use

HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE+LOSARTAN should not be used unless prescribed by a doctor. Always take HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE+LOSARTAN exactly as your doctor told you. Your doctor will advise you how often you take your tablets based on your medical condition. Swallow HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE+LOSARTAN with a full glass of water; if required, tablets can be broken in half to give a smaller dose.

Drug Warnings

HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE+LOSARTAN should not be given to the people allergic to HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE+LOSARTAN, have low blood pressure (less than 90 mm of Hg), have had a heart attack, kidney disease, liver disease, pregnant women, or planning to get pregnant and breastfeeding women. It should be used with caution in patients who have diabetes. Besides this, it is contraindicated in low blood pressure (hypotension), cardiogenic shock (sudden stopping of blood flow to the heart), and aortic stenosis (heart valve problem). HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE+LOSARTAN can pass into breast milk, but its effect on the baby is not known. So, it is better to tell your doctor if you are taking HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE+LOSARTAN and breastfeeding. Do not consume alcohol with HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE+LOSARTAN as it may increase the risk of low blood pressure. Avoid potassium supplements with HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE+LOSARTAN as it may lead to high potassium levels in the blood. Regular blood tests and blood pressure monitoring are recommended while taking HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE+LOSARTAN. Drink a lot of fluids as HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE+LOSARTAN can cause dehydration, so to avoid unpleasant side-effects, increase the intake of fluids.

Drug-Drug Interaction:

This medicine may have an interaction with medicines used to treat mood disorders (lithium), medicines used to treat heart disorders (digoxin), antidiabetic medicines (metformin, insulin), medicines used to treat erectile dysfunction (sildenafil), medicines used to lower cholesterol levels (simvastatin), immunosuppressants (cyclosporine), and other anti-hypertensive medicines (aliskiren, enalapril, lisinopril, ramipril), NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen), and antidiabetics (insulin, glipizide, pioglitazone, rosiglitazone).

Drug-Disease Interaction:

 The efficacy of HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE+LOSARTAN is affected, and the disease condition may even worsen if taken in patients with a recent or history of heart attack, low blood pressure, low potassium level, low electrolytes (sodium, potassium, calcium, etc.), anuria (non-passage of urine), angioedema (an allergic condition with swelling under the skin), lupus (an autoimmune disease), kidney disease, liver disease, and diabetes.

Safety Advice

ALCOHOL

• You are recommended not to consume alcohol and HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE+LOSARTAN to avoid unpleasant side effects like drowsiness, dizziness, and liver damage.

PREGNANCY

• HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE+LOSARTAN is not recommended during pregnancy. This medicine may cause fetal damage and can affect the unborn baby (fetus).

BREAST FEEDING

• HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE+LOSARTAN is known to pass breast milk, but, its effect on the baby is not known. So, before breastfeeding, let your doctor know about this.

DRIVING

• Drive with caution, HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE+LOSARTAN usually causes drowsiness and affects driving ability.

LIVER

• HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE+LOSARTAN to be taken with caution, especially if you have or have had a history of liver disease. Your doctor will have to change the dosage depending on your medical condition and your reaction to treatment.

KIDNEY

• Not recommended in patients with chronic kidney disease (severe renal impairment). Safety and effectiveness in patients with severe renal impairment have not been established.
