Chloramphenicol is an antibiotic which stops bacterial growth in the eye. It does so by preventing synthesis of essential proteins required by bacteria to carry out vital functions. Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose is a lubricant similar to natural tears. It provides temporary relief from burning and discomfort in the eye.
