About Xylovir 800mg Tablet
Acyclovir is an antiviral drug that is used to treat symptoms of shingles, chickenpox, cold sores and genital herpes which are all caused by herpes viruses. It is also used to prevent having regular outbreaks of genital herpes. Acyclovir will not get rid of the virus infection but does help sores heal faster and helps with pain relief.
Uses of Xylovir 800mg Tablet
Acyclovir is used in the treatment of herpes labialis, herpes simplex virus infections, shingles, genital herpes infection and chickenpox.
Medicinal Benefits of Xylovir 800mg Tablet
Acyclovir is an antiviral medication. It prevents the multiplication of virus in human cells. This stops the virus from producing new viruses and clears up your infection.
Directions for Use
Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually 2 to 5 times a day. Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medication unless your doctor directs you otherwise.
If you are using the liquid form of this medication, shake the bottle well before each dose. Carefully measure the dose using a special measuring device/spoon. Do not use a household spoon because you may not get the correct dose.
This medication works best when started at the first sign of an outbreak, as directed by your doctor. It may not work as well if you delay treatment.
Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. In children, dosage is also based on weight.
This medication works best when the amount of drug in your body is kept at a constant level. Take this drug at evenly spaced intervals. To help you remember, take it at the same times each day.
Continue to take this medication until the full prescribed amount is finished. Do not change your dose, skip any doses, or stop this medication early without your doctor's approval.
Tell your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.
Side Effects of Xylovir 800mg Tablet
Common acyclovir side effects may include:

mild skin pain;

rash, itching;
-
nausea, vomiting, diarrhea;
-
headache or
-
mouth pain while using an acyclovir buccal tablet.
Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction to acyclovir: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Call your doctor at once if you have:

easy bruising or bleeding, purple or red pinpoint spots under your skin;
-
changes in behavior;
-
confusion, hallucinations; or
-
signs of a kidney problem - little or no urinating; painful or difficult urination; swelling in your feet or ankles; feeling tired or short of breath.

In-Depth Precautions and Warning
Drug Warnings
Take acyclovir for the entire length of time prescribed by your doctor. Your symptoms may get better before the infection is completely treated.
Treatment with acyclovir should be started as soon as possible after the first appearance of symptoms (such as tingling, burning, blisters).
Herpes infections are contagious and you can infect other people, even while you are being treated with acyclovir. Avoid letting infected areas come into contact with other people. Avoid touching an infected area and then touching your eyes. Wash your hands frequently to prevent passing the infection to others.
Drug-Drug Interaction:
Using this medicine with any of the following medicines is usually not recommended, but may be required in some cases. If both medicines are prescribed together, your doctor may change the dose or how often you use one or both of the medicines.
- Bupropion
- Dichlorphenamide
- Fexinidazole
- Foscarnet
- Leflunomide
- Nitisinone
- Teriflunomide
Using this medicine with any of the following medicines may cause an increased risk of certain side effects, but using both drugs may be the best treatment for you. If both medicines are prescribed together, your doctor may change the dose or how often you use one or both of the medicines.
- Fosphenytoin
- Phenytoin
- Valproic Acid
Safety Advice
ALCOHOL
Alcohol will not interfere with the way the antiviral drugs works. Acyclovir will still be effective.
However, the general advice is if you are suffering from any type of infection is that you are best to avoid alcohol so that you can give your body the best chance to fight off the infection and to reduce the risk of side effects, such as dizziness, especially in older adults.
PREGNANCY
This drug has been safely used to treat genital herpes in women in all stages of pregnancy.
Women who acquire genital herpes simplex virus (HSV) during late pregnancy should be managed in consultation with maternal-fetal medicine and infectious-disease specialists.
BREAST FEEDING
Studies in women suggest that this medication poses minimal risk to the infant when used during breastfeeding.
