VILAZODONE is a type of antidepressant that belongs to the class of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and is primarily used to treat depression. Depression is a mood disorder that affects day to day life of a person. A person may have symptoms such as feeling sad or feeling of loss and might have mood swings.

VILAZODONE contains 'vilazodone' is a type of antidepressant that belongs to the class of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and is primarily used to treat depression. It works by increasing the serotonin levels. Serotonin is a chemical messenger in the brain responsible for improving the mood and physical symptoms of depression. VILAZODONE helps in relieving anxiety symptoms in patients with a generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).
Directions for Use
Take VILAZODONE in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole with a glass full of water. Do not chew, crush or break it. VILAZODONE is to be taken with food. Administration without food can result in inadequate drug concentrations and may diminish effectiveness.

Drug Warnings
Inform your doctor if you are allergic to VILAZODONE. Try not to stop taking VILAZODONE of your own as it may lead to unpleasant side effects. Let your doctor know about this, as it may cause withdrawal symptoms. Tell your doctor if you are taking the medicines other than the VILAZODONE. It should be used with caution due to the increased risk of a severe and life-threatening condition called serotonin syndrome. VILAZODONE should be used with caution in an increased risk of bleeding, mania, suicidal tendency, hyponatremia condition. Do not take VILAZODONE if you have epilepsy (seizure disorder or fits), or currently taking medicines for depression known as MAO inhibitors (such as Isocarboxazid, Phenelzine, Selegiline), or problems with alcohol or other prescription drugs. VILAZODONE should be used with caution due to the increased risk of visual disturbances. This risk is especially higher in patients with a history of eye diseases. Do not stop the use of this medicine without consulting your doctor. Abrupt discontinuation may cause withdrawal symptoms such as nausea, headache, anxiety, dizziness, and irritability. Gradual dose reduction should be made under the doctor's supervision.
Drug Interactions
Drug-Drug Interaction:
VILAZODONE may have interaction with antidiabetic drugs (glibenclamide, gliclazide, chlorpropamide), anti-histamine (terfenadine), blood-thinners (warfarin, Coumadin), antibiotics (clarithromycin, erythromycin), migraine (almotriptan), anti-depressants (citalopram, duloxetine, fluoxetine, escitalopram, nefazodone), antiemetic (ondansetron), anti-TB (rifampicin), antifungals (itraconazole, ketoconazole), (NSAIDs) such as (aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen) linezolid, lithium, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) such as (indinavir, nelfinavir and ritonavir) medications for, anti-epileptic (carbamazepine, phenytoin).
Drug-Disease Interaction:
People affected with bipolar disorder (manic depression), bleeding or blood clotting disorder, drug addiction or suicidal thoughts, liver or kidney disease, seizures, low levels of sodium in your blood, angular closure glaucoma.
Safety Advice
ALCOHOL
Consumption of alcohol is not recommended during treatment with this medicine due to the increased risk of severe side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, impaired judgment, impaired thinking, lethargy, restlessness, etc.
PREGNANCY
Not enough scientific data available for VILAZODONE, hence It is advised to consult your doctor.
BREAST FEEDING
There is no published experience with vilazodone during breastfeeding, especially while nursing a newborn or preterm infant. Please consult your doctor.
DRIVING
VILAZODONE may decrease alertness, affect your vision or make you feel sleepy and dizzy. Do not drive if these symptoms occur.
LIVER
VILAZODONE should be used with caution in patients with severe liver disease. Dose adjustment of VILAZODONE may be needed. Please consult your doctor before taking VILAZODONE. Limited information is available for the use of VILAZODONE in these patients. No dose adjustment is recommended in patients with mild to moderate liver disease.
KIDNEY
VILAZODONE is probably safe to use in patients with kidney disease. Limited data available suggests that dose adjustment of VILAZODONE may not be needed in these patients. Please consult your doctor before taking VILAZODONE.
